Pageantry Is Not Just About Beauty – Miss World Reveals

A beauty queen, Miss Harriet Lamptey, has revealed that the time when pageants were solely about good looks is gone and has advised aspiring queens to stop depending on just their looks if they want to win pageants.

Miss Lamptey, 28, who has participated in a good number of pageants and won some, believes what matters most these days are contestants being widely read and knowledgeable about stuff around them and in the world.

Some of the pageants she has participated in include the 2017 Miss Galaxy (first runner-up), 2018 Miss Pan Africa Queen International (second runner-up), 2019 Miss Glamour Look International, Philippines, Continental and Mayor’s Sportsmanship Challenge(winner) and 2019 Miss UN Grand Prix World Title(winner).

In a chat with Graphic Showbiz, Miss Lamptey said, “Now beauty pageants are no longer about good looks but the brain as well. As a beauty queen, you need to prepare yourself by reading widely and learning about everything around you so that you will be on top of your game.

“There are a lot of beautiful ladies who believe their looks alone will get them the crown and are disappointed when that doesn’t happen in the end. I have contested with some of the most beautiful girls but I beat them to the crown and they just couldn’t believe it”, she said.

Miss Lamptey will be competing at Miss International World, Florida, USA, from October 15-17, 2022 and she is very confident of bringing the crown home.

“I am very confident I will emerge the ultimate winner and I will make Ghana very proud. I have a lot of experience and I believe in myself”, she said.

According to the graduate of the University of Ghana, Legon, it is about time the government of Ghana and corporate bodies invested in pageants.

“Most of the ladies who participate in beauty pageants have great projects they want to embark on but they are forced to shelve them because of lack of funds. This is why I am making a plea to the government to come on board and help. We can do a lot when given the needed support,” she added.

Her Hertie Care Foundation, founded five years ago, has been making donations to the less privileged in society.
